Shred all documents that contain your personal information. Personal information is still gathered from the trash by thieves, so take caution and shred your credit card statements, bank statements, medical bills, etc.

Empty your mail box quickly. Don’t give identity thieves the opportunity to steal personal documents form your mail box, empty it every day as soon as possible. You can also get a PO Box or locking mail box for added security. You should also never mail bills or letters containing personal checks from home as they can be stolen too.

Incidents of identity theft and fraud are at an all time high this year topping the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) list of complaints. Reports of fraud and identity theft made up about 39 percent of consumer complaints with Internet auction fraud coming in second place with about 16 percent consumer complaints.

Identity theft is a major problem for consumers today. With the inception of the Internet, more and more innocent people are finding themselves victims of identity theft and fraud. These crimes include credit card fraud, stolen bank funds, and even stolen identity theft by criminals looking to escape prosecution for their crimes.

Studies done by the Federal Trade Commission have shown identity theft against children to be the fastest growing sector reporting complaints of identity theft. In many cases the children can’t even trust their parents to protect them because sadly family members commit the majority of child identity thefts.

The government needs to step in and take measures to protect children from greedy or misled relatives. In addition, corporations who have taken steps to be more forgiving to adult victims of identity theft have to become more understanding when dealing with complaints of child identity theft.
